How Social Connections Affect Your Brain Health

No Comments on How Social Connections Affect Your Brain Health

As humans, we are wired to connect with others. From the beginning of time, we have relied on our social connections to survive and thrive. It’s no surprise that our social ties also play a significant role in our brain health. Researchers are increasingly studying the impact of social isolation and loneliness on cognitive function and mental health.

Several studies have shown that socializing has a positive impact on brain health. Regular socializing can help reduce stress, lower inflammation, improve memory and cognitive function, and even extend lifespan. On the other hand, loneliness and social isolation can lead to several negative consequences on brain health, such as depression, anxiety, and a higher risk of developing dementia.

Numerous physiological and psychological benefits come with social connections. When we socialize, we tend to engage in activities that improve cognitive function, such as playing games, problem-solving, and discussing various topics. Socializing also helps our brain to release dopamine and oxytocin, neurotransmitters, which affect mood stability and create a sense of happiness.

Research has shown that socializing can lower the production of cortisol, a hormone known to cause stress, and increase oxytocin levels. Low levels of cortisol, coupled with high oxytocin, have a positive impact on our emotional well-being.

Furthermore, socializing triggers the release of endorphins, which have a calming effect on our mood, reduce pain, and alleviate stress. Endorphins also enhance our immune system and reduce inflammation, which can lead to better overall health.

If you are feeling lonely, it’s important to recognize that it’s a normal feeling, but it’s essential to take proactive steps. You can start by:

1. Joining social clubs, interest groups, or meet-up groups that suit your interests.

2. Staying connected to family and friends through phone or video calls, even if you cannot meet in person.

3. Volunteering for a cause that resonates with you.

4. Participating in community-based events and celebrations.

5. Investing in your romantic relationships by spending time together and building mutual interests.

It’s vital to understand that social connections are as vital to living an extended, healthy life as eating well and getting enough sleep. Lack of social ties may have the same effect on your body as smoking, leading to increased inflammation, higher blood pressure, and weaker immune function.

In conclusion, nurturing strong social relationships is critical to our overall wellbeing. By taking positive steps to build and maintain meaningful social connections, we can improve our cognitive function, reduce stress, and increase happiness. Remember to make time for the people you care about, and don’t let loneliness isolate you.

Is your child’s brain function impacted by his/her schoolbag?

As schools across the country remove, or restrict access to student lockers, more and more books, accessories and other possessions are being stuffed into backpacks. The student can become a “walking locker”.

Our youngest children are especially at risk. The fifth grade level seems to be the time when children are required to start loading backpacks with more books than personal belongings. At this age, around 10, muscles and bones are still developing and problems can start that can carry through the lifetime of the person.

Some statistics from the US:

More than 40 million students carry school backpacks (Teaching Elementary Physical

Health, March 1999).

A 1999 study by Simmons College (Boston) professor Dr. Shelly Goodgold, Sc.D found that more than half of children in a study regularly carried more than the recommended 15% of their body weight in their school backpacks.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that more than 3,300 children, aged 5-14 years, were treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to backpacks in 1998; these numbers do not include students who went to family physicians or orthopedists.

A study by Auburn University researchers (Anniston, Alabama, Pascoe, et al) stated the most common symptom reported from backpack use is “rucksack palsy.” This condition results when pressure put on the nerve in the shoulder causes numbness in the hands, muscle wasting, and in extreme cases, nerve damage (Journal Ergonomics, vol. 40, #6, 1997).

58% of orthopedists polled in 1999 in Chicago and Wilmington, Delaware, reported treating children with back or shoulder pain attributable to carrying backpacks.

SPECIAL OFFER:

You can discover if your child has a postural distortion. Normal posture screens are $160. Come in and get your report for $40.  You will get the Posture Screen pictures and a discussion if the Postural Distortion is affecting your child’s learning ability.

Why are Women the ‘Fatter’ Sex?

No Comments on Why are Women the ‘Fatter’ Sex?

Why is it that most fat reduction clients are women?

It’s the biological design for women to have the propensity to put on weight.

That’s why women tend to have more body fat than men, 10% more on average. Here’s why.

1. Women tend to store fat readily:

It’s a carryover from ancient times when availability to food was uznpredictable and women needed to survive to create new lives.

2. Women have higher lean-to fat ratios:

– Men have more lean muscle, which burns more calories.

– Women carry between six and eleven percent more body fat than men – even when they take in fewer calories.

3. Women produce more estrogen and less testosterone:

– Estrogen is the primary female hormone.  It prompts the body to store and deposit fat to create ‘female curves.’

 – Testosterone is the primary male hormone.  It promotes muscle growth and maintains muscle mass.

The Function of Body Fat

Body fat, medical term adipose tissue, is a complex organ in the body.  Its main job is to store and release energy (in the form of calories) but it serves many other functions. Controls the release of multiple hormones that control metabolism.

• Assists in regulating body temperature and vitamin absorption

• Supports other cellular structures within the body

• Some fat cells even produce energy and burn fat

Leaky Gut Syndrome: Causes, Symptomsand Treatment Options

Leaky gut syndrome, also known as intestinal permeability, is a condition that affects the lining of the intestinal tract. The intestinal lining is supposed to act as a barrier, preventing harmful substances from entering the bloodstream. In individuals with leaky gut syndrome, this barrier becomes compromised, allowing harmful substances to pass through and enter the bloodstream.

Causes: There is no single cause of leaky gut syndrome. However, certain factors can increase the risk of developing the condition. These include:

  • Chronic stress
  • Poor diet
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Chronic use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Infections such as candida overgrowth and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
  • Intestinal dysbiosis, which is an imbalance of the gut microbiome

Symptoms: The symptoms of leaky gut syndrome can vary from person to person. However, some common symptoms include:

  • Chronic diarrhea, constipation, or both
  • Bloating and gas
  • Fatigue
  • Skin rashes and eczema
  • Joint pain
  • Headaches
  • Brain fog
  • Treatment options: The treatment

Dietary Changes: Eliminating processed foods, refined carbohydrates, sugar, and alcohol from the diet can help reduce inflammation in the gut and improve the health of the intestinal lining. Eating a nutrient-dense diet that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats can also help improve gut health.

Probiotics: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help improve gut health by restoring the balance of bacteria in the gut.

Gut Healing Supplements: Supplements such as L-glutamine, zinc, and collagen can help heal the gut lining.

Stress Management: Stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing can help reduce inflammation in the gut and improve gut health.

Medications: Certain medications, such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, may be prescribed to treat infections or reduce inflammation in the gut.

Environmental Toxin Avoidance: Avoiding exposure to environmental toxins such as pesticides, heavy metals, and pollutants can help reduce damage to the gut lining.

I have put at least 10,000 individuals on their blood type diets and worked with at least 5,000 cases of leaky gut syndrome. Occasionally we may have had to tweak they diets a little to account for their epi-genetic variations. At least 85% of this population expressed satisfaction on these diet plans.  If you struggle with constipation, diarrhoea, acid reflux, heartburn, GERD, indigestion, gas, or bloating, Call us and get support now. Dont suffer alone in silence.

The Power of Positive Thinking for Brain Health

As a naturopath and postural neurologist, I can attest to the profound impact that positive thinking can have on brain health. Countless studies have found that individuals who cultivate a positive outlook on life not only experience greater happiness and wellbeing, but also exhibit stronger brain function and cognitive abilities.

One key way that positive thinking benefits the brain is by reducing the harmful effects of stress. Chronic stress can have severe negative consequences for brain health, including shrinking certain regions of the brain, impairing cognitive function, and increasing risk of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. However, studies have found that individuals who engage in positive thinking practices, such as mindfulness meditation, experience less stress and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, leading to a healthier, more resilient brain.

Another way that positive thinking can boost brain health is by promoting the growth of new neurons and neural connections. This process, known as neuroplasticity, allows the brain to continually adapt and learn throughout life. Studies have found that individuals who practice positive thinking exercises, such as gratitude journaling or visualization, exhibit greater neural plasticity and improved memory and cognitive function.

Case studies from my own practice have also demonstrated the powerful effects of positive thinking on brain health. One patient, for instance, suffered from debilitating migraines and chronic pain for years. However, through a combination of mindfulness meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other positive thinking practices, she was able to reduce her symptoms by over 50% and improve her quality of life dramatically.

Believing that “everything will be OK” can prevent you from noticing and acting on red flags. You may overlook physical symptoms associated with a major health condition, meaning you don’t get diagnosed until it’s too late. You may gloss over marital conflicts until the situation becomes so unbearable, you’re headed for divorce. You may downplay a loved one’s drinking problems until they have gotten caught in the grips of addiction. Or you may ignore symptoms of a mental health condition like depression or ADD/ADHD until your life has spiraled out of control. Not dealing with things early on only leads to bigger problems.

Developing the habit of accurate, honest, and disciplined thinking is a critical component of a happy and successful life. Having some anxiety is required. An appropriate level of anxiety helps us make better decisions. It prevents us from running into the street as children, risking broken bodies, and running headlong into toxic relationships as adults, risking broken hearts. The bottom line: It is always best to balance optimism with planning for and preventing future trouble.

In conclusion, positive thinking is a powerful tool for promoting brain health and wellbeing. Whether you are looking to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, or simply achieve greater happiness in life, incorporating positive thinking practices into your daily routine can have profound and long-lasting benefits for your brain and overall health. So why not start today? Challenge negative thoughts, practice gratitude, visualize success, and cultivate a more positive outlook on life – your brain will thank you!

If you are struggling with brain fog, memory issues, focus issues and insomnia we can help.

Do you have Sitting Disease?

No Comments on Do you have Sitting Disease?

A typical office worker is sedentary for 21 hours out of the day. Including exercise and physical activity, people across the U.S. only spend approximately 3 hours out of the day simply standing. This is very similar to what happens in many Asian countries.

This phenomenon has been coined as “Sitting Disease,” which, broadly speaking, is defined as a condition of increased sedentary behavior associated with adverse health effects.

Sitting Disease causes:

– 94% higher chance of death in inactive women who sit for 6+ hours a day compared to standing counterparts

– 48% higher chance of death in inactive men who sit for 6+ hours a day compared to standing counterparts

Over the last few years of working from home, staying at home orders, and social distancing, many people are sitting even more than before the COVID-19 pandemic. Sitting is something so commonplace we often don’t realize just how much of our day is truly spent sedentary. However, sitting for too long can have many negative impacts on health and longevity.

A 2011 study in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found that prolonged sitting was associated with an increased risk of 34 chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

Sedentary behavior can be defined by two things: the position you are in, which is generally reclining or sitting, and the amount of energy expenditure that your body is experiencing.

You may wonder if this applies to you?

Unfortunately, according to The Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the “Active Couch Potato” phenomenon states that even an active person who works out five times a week still faces the risks associated with “Sitting Disease” if they are living a sedentary lifestyle outside of the gym. Unfortunately, you can’t undo eight plus hours of sitting with a workout!

Although participating in moderate to vigorous exercise 3-5 times a week is recommended, it’s important to start with the first step: standing. Dr. Brian Liem, MD, FAAPMR, from UW Sports Medicine, says that a “lifestyle of prolonged sitting is distinctly different even from a lifestyle absent of routine exercise.”

You can also combat “Sitting Disease” through small things. Try parking farther away, standing while you eat lunch, and doing one-leg balance stances while you watch television or brush your teeth. Every little step you take is one less moment spent sitting.

Alongside standing, aerobic exercise is extremely important. As recommended by the researchers, you should be performing a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity about 5 days a week or 20 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic activity about 3 days a week.

The Benefits of Fermented Foods for Gut Health

No Comments on The Benefits of Fermented Foods for Gut Health

Fermented foods have been consumed by humans for centuries and are known for their health-promoting properties. Fermentation is a process in which microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, and fungi break down carbohydrates and convert them into organic acids, alcohols, and gases. This process not only preserves the food but also creates new flavors and textures. More importantly, it creates beneficial bacteria known as probiotics that are essential for gut health.

The human gut is home to trillions of microorganisms that make up the gut microbiome. These microorganisms play a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function. When the gut microbiome is imbalanced, it can lead to a range of health problems such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and even chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Fermented foods are rich in probiotics, which can help restore the balance of the gut microbiome. Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide a wide range of health benefits. They help maintain the integrity of the gut lining, enhance immune function, and reduce inflammation. Studies have also shown that consuming probiotics can help alleviate symptoms of digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and lactose intolerance.

In addition to probiotics, fermented foods contain other beneficial compounds such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are produced during the fermentation process. SCFAs provide energy for the cells in the colon and help maintain a healthy gut pH. They also have anti-inflammatory properties and can help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut.

Some examples of fermented foods include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, tempeh, and kombucha. Adding these foods to your diet can help improve gut health and overall well-being. It is important to note that not all fermented foods contain probiotics, so it is essential to choose products that are labeled as containing live and active cultures.

In conclusion, fermented foods are a rich source of probiotics and other beneficial compounds that can help improve gut health. Incorporating these foods into your diet can have a positive impact on digestion, immunity, and overall health.

I have put at least 10,000 individuals on their blood type diets. Occasionally we may have had to tweak they diets a little to account for their epi-genetic variations. How to Improve Sleep and Rhythms to Preserve Brain Health

What is the best way to measure sleep?

The brain-wave sleep that is an indicator of brain health is not measured by most consumer technology devices. They can still offer insights about your sleep patterns and wakefulness during the night. There are physical changes in your body during sleep. Your heart rate, body temperature, and activity levels are included. Some newer technology can distinguish light and deep sleep, and some sensors can use a program to predict when you are asleep or awake. The advantage to using these sensors is that they can measure every day and give a sense of your sleep regularity over time.

There is a connection between sleep and brain health and it shows us how to prevent and treat brain diseases.

Researchers used a sound that stimulates sleep in older adults. The amount of improvement in sleep was related to the improvement in memory. The study found that timed light therapy improved daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, daily physical activity levels, and the Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale score, which measures the severity and progression of the disease.

Our internal rhythm needs to be in sync with our exposure to light and darkness for our bodies to function well. The light that reaches the eyes is different from the light that is available in the sun. The right types of light are available at the right times if you match your internal clock to the sun. Our sleep and wake cycles are affected by the light and dark that we experience daily. Our nutrition provides us with information about when and how much we eat.

Our lifestyles can affect our sleep and rhythms. External factors, like our daily schedule, can negatively impact sleep. It also means lifestyle changes can have a positive impact on sleep.

Researchers recommends setting a regular sleep-wake schedule that will give you 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night. She says that it is more important than how much sleep you get to have a good brain. Light exposure and eating timed to coincide with the day will help your body stay in rhythm. Alcohol can disrupt sleep and suppress sleep, so reduce or avoid it. This causes a rebound effect that wakes you up.

How much sleep is enough? How do you know you are getting enough?

Regularity is important. We all have bad nights. It can have a bigger impact on our health if it is chronic. The general recommendation is 7 to 8 hours for adults and 7 to 8 hours for older adults. There are differences based on our unique bodies.

How do you know you are getting enough sleep? Consider how you feel. Are you able to stay awake and do your daily activities? These daytime indicators help us gauge how much sleep we need since we can’t get regular scans of our brains.

If you are struggling with brain fog, memory issues, focus issues and insomnia we can help.

Emotional Healing Approaches

No Comments on Emotional Healing Approaches

If you’re trying to heal your emotional pain, here are some ways that you can embark on your journey to emotional healing

Therapy

Emotional healing can be incredibly rewarding but it can also be painful in the interim. You might want to consider talking to a mental health professional who is trained in working with people on emotional healing journeys every day.

They can help you heal at a pace that is appropriate for you and provide the insight you might not be able to reach on your own.

Mindfulness

When we are attempting emotional healing from something, it can be very easy to get pulled back into past events or to catastrophize what the future will be like if you don’t heal. Mindfulness practices can help you be in the present moment and see that, at this moment, you are just fine.

Journaling is often suggested—and for good reason. Research shows4 that journaling is an effective way to reach insights into the unconscious by helping people work through their feelings and make meaning of what has happened to them.

Allow yourself to feel the fullness of your grief, anger, pain, or loss without attaching further meaning, stories, or thoughts. This can be deeply healing and helpful in processing emotions.

Research indicates the cycle of an emotion may last only 90 seconds.5 This information can help emotions feel less overwhelming. When you are overcome by an emotion, you can keep an eye on the clock to note how long it takes before the feeling dissipates—employing mindfulness skills in the meantime.

Notice, allow, and describe the physical sensation of the emotion moving through your body without judging it or attempting to change it. Breathe through the sensations.

You can perform exercises to ground yourself such as putting your feet on the floor, drinking a sip of water, or running cold water over your hands.

Move Your Body

As you’re experiencing difficult emotions, try to move your body to help process your feelings. Move your body in ways that it wants to move (i.e., slowly or quickly, shaking or running).

Moving the body to process stress or trauma can be seen in the animal kingdom as well. In his book “Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma,” therapist Peter A. Levine notes that in the wild, an impala that escapes its predator will instinctively “shake off” the traumatic event, regaining full movement of its body.6

Therapeutic techniques like somatic experiencing (SE) and trauma release exercises (TRE) can help process and move trauma and emotions from within the body. SE involves a person becoming aware of their internal bodily sensations and bringing awareness to them.7 TRE involves a person intentionally moving their bodies to decrease stress levels.8

“Psychosomatic experiencing is about working directly with your nervous system. You are about to become intimately familiar and comfortable with your inner survival system. You will learn how to shift the different emotional states to a manageable level within a few minutes.

When our emotions are running our lives, we are not in a state of calm aliveness. Rather, there are imbalances in the nervous system that cause problems. It causes imbalances in other systems and organs in our body. Not to mention how these imbalances influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviours towards ourselves and others.”
