The Role of Sleep and Rhythms and your Brain

50 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder. Our brain health is dependent on sleep. There is a correlation between sleep problems and neurological diseases. Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and others are included.

The brain is very complex. The American Brain Foundation believes that finding a cure for one brain disease will help find cures for others. The association between sleep and brain health shows how one issue can be linked to multiple diseases.

Accordin to Phyllis C. Zee, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Sleep Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine sleep and our circadian rhythms play an important role in brain health.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus is the brain’s master clock and it controls many systems of the body. Our body systems follow a cycle of rest and activity to help us function. Our bodies regulate sleep at the cellular and molecular level. The near- 24 hour biological rhythms, or the circadian rhythm, have been shown to be genetically regulated and they exist in almost every cell of our body.

It is a two-way relationship. Our brains and bodies regulate our sleep. Our sleep and rhythms affect our brains and bodies. Our health and body functions are affected by sleep disruptions. They are linked to an increased risk for diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Some data shows that sleep and rhythm issues may be a risk factor for brain disease.

Research shows that deep sleep decreases with age. A decrease in deep sleep is associated with an increase in amyloid. People with Alzheimer’s have a certain amount of this Protein. Quality sleep will allow the fluids between the neurons to flush out large molecule and prevent toxic build up. The risk for brain diseases could be increased by disrupted sleep.

REM sleep behavior disorder (RBM) is a condition in which people with Parkinson’s disease act out their dreams for years before their diagnosis. The sleep disorder could be considered a prodromal syndrome if it is a sign that precedes Parkinson’s. People with RBD are more likely to have cognitive problems.

When our emotions are running our lives, we are not in a state of calm aliveness. Rather, there are imbalances in the nervous system that cause problems. It causes imbalances in other systems and organs in our body. Not to mention how these imbalances influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviours towards ourselves and others.”
