Get Up, Stand Up: Combatting “Sitting Disease”

Over the last few years of working from home, staying at home orders, and social distancing, many people are sitting even more than before the COVID-19 pandemic. Sitting is something so commonplace we often don’t realize just how much of our day is truly spent sedentary. However, sitting for too long can have many negative impacts on health and longevity.

A 2011 study in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found that prolonged sitting was associated with an increased risk of 34 chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Yikes!

A typical American is sedentary for 21 hours out of the day. Including exercise and physical activity, people across the U.S. only spend approximately 3 hours out of the day simply standing.

This phenomenon has been coined as “Sitting Disease,” which, broadly speaking, is defined as a condition of increased sedentary behavior associated with adverse health effects. Sedentary behavior can be defined by two things: the position you are in, which is generally reclining or sitting, and the amount of energy expenditure that your body is experiencing.

According to US studies, 60% of Americans that are obese and overweight, the 90% of the population worldwide that has postural distortion patterns, and 48% of men will die early due to Sitting Disease.

Women are seated for more than 7 hours per day are 47% more likely to suffer from symptoms of depression?

Postural Hyperkyphosis, a postural hyperkyphosis with a C-shaped spinal curvature is now a diagnostic factor in depression.

The WORST consequence of all associated with prolonged sitting in poor posture is early mortality.

Researchers followed thousands of men and women over the course of 13 years. They discovered that women who were sedentary, sitting more than 6 hours per day were 94% more likely to die during that time period! 94% more likely to suffer an early death than women who were physically active and sat for less than 3 hours per day!

Men who sat for 6 hours per day were 48% more likely to die than the men who were standing more often. 48%!!!

Plus, further research studies show that workers with the hyperkyphosis postural distortion pattern (Demonstrate) have a 1.14 fold increase in early mortality over and above their increased risk from sitting!

Here is the scary part, the average American sits for 7.7 hours per day and the majority of the population has postural distortion patterns! That is how realistic this problem really is.

After hearing these statistics, it is obvious that “Sitting is the New Smoking?”

Now keep in mind, if you smoked one cigarette it wouldn’t cause a huge health problem. The same with being seated. If you are seated for a couple of hours, it won’t cause harm. However, when you’re seated for hours and hours per day throughout the course of your career, then overtime it can greatly impact your health. And, if you’re seated in poor posture, it is the equivalent of having a smoking problem and a drinking problem. Poor sedentary posture is very hard on the body.

Postural Correction and proper seating and working habits will add years of healthy productive living life to your life.

I had a client, named David who had Sitting Disease. He had excruciating headaches alternating with neck pain.

He thought that sitting on the job made his occupation “low risk.” But it is just the opposite. sedentary behaviours are the direct cause of so many modern day aches, pains, and chronic diseases.

When David came in, he told me he had no idea why he had this chronic neck pain and headache, he hadn’t done anything out of the ordinary to cause it. What he didn’t realize was that the collection of his habits that he does regularly on a daily basis, or his lifestyle habits, actually had more of an impact on his posture than a traumatic injury.

How he was sitting at work every day. Sometimes for up to 12 hours was greatly impacting his postural presentation, which then led to horrible neck pain and headaches. We discussed his workspace and how we could design it ergonomically on a budget to prevent his headaches from coming back. He would sit at this low table with this small lap top. He was really tall. Then he would hunch over the laptop at the table for hours.

So after doing manual correction in the clinic, we had him do suitable rehabilitative exercises and change his sitting and working posture so that he was looking directly the screen. He learnt what behaviour was triggering his pain. He learnt new behaviours improved his posture and became pain free.

I am going to offer each of you a complete posture analysis, a value of $160for just $40. The return on investment for this postural evaluation, for David was transformational. I am confident that if we find postural distortions we will have transformational results with you as well.
